Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch

Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch produces a fabric that looks very much like knitted stocking stitch. The finished fabric is just much thicker, and doesn’t have as much stretch.

It is worked on a Tunisian/Afghan hook which looks like a knitting needle with a hook instead of a point on the one end, and a stopper on the other. These hooks come in different sizes for use with different yarn weights.

Each row of Tunisian crochet is worked in 2 parts – a cast on row and a cast-off row. Unlike other forms of crochet, the work is never turned so you will always have the same side facing you.

This swatch is worked in  Tunisian Crochet knit stitch, using ColourSpun Pure Cotton Super Soft Chunky yarn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch look like?
The Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch produces a fabric that closely resembles knitted stocking stitch. The finished fabric is thicker than knitting and has less stretch, making it ideal for structured projects like blankets and cushion covers.

What hook do I need for the Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch?
You need a Tunisian or Afghan crochet hook, which looks like a knitting needle with a hook at one end and a stopper at the other. For this sample, a 10mm hook was used with Pure Cotton Super Soft Chunky yarn.

What yarn works well for this stitch?
Any yarn works well, but ColourSpun Pure Cotton Super Soft Chunky was used for this sample. Pure Merino DK is another good option for a softer, finer fabric.

How is Tunisian crochet different from regular crochet?
Each row of Tunisian crochet is worked in two parts, a cast on row and a cast off row. Unlike regular crochet, the work is never turned, so the same side always faces you throughout.

Is the Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch suitable for beginners?
Yes, with a little patience. The stitch itself is straightforward and repetitive once the foundation row is established, making it a good introduction to Tunisian crochet for anyone who already has basic crochet skills.

What can I make with the Tunisian Crochet Knit Stitch?
This stitch works beautifully for blankets, throws, and cushion covers. Work individual blocks and join them together, or start with a foundation chain as wide as your project needs to be and work straight through.
