Frequently Asked Questions

What is Broderie Anglaise knitting stitch?
Broderie Anglaise is a knitted eyelet stitch that creates a pattern of small, decorative holes resembling Broderie Anglaise embroidered fabric. Because of its delicate, feminine appearance, it is particularly well suited to soft garments and baby knits.

What is the stitch multiple for Broderie Anglaise?
Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches plus 4. Since the pattern also includes a five row garter border at the cast on and cast off edges, these border rows are worked in plain knit to frame the eyelet pattern neatly.

What skill level is needed for Broderie Anglaise stitch?
Although the pattern uses some less common techniques, it is accessible to a confident intermediate knitter. However, the k1long stitch requires a little practice, since it involves picking up stitches from two rows earlier to create the characteristic eyelet holes.

What is the k1long stitch?
The k1long stitch creates the eyelet hole by inserting the needle into the space between two decreases from two rows earlier, knitting a stitch through that hole, working the next two stitches normally, then knitting another stitch through the same space. Because both stitches are worked into the same hole, they frame the eyelet evenly on each side.

What yarn works well for Broderie Anglaise stitch?
Pure Merino DK was used for this sample, since a smooth, fine yarn shows the delicate eyelet pattern most clearly. However, the stitch works equally well with any ColourSpun natural yarn in a similar weight.

What can I make with Broderie Anglaise stitch?
Because it creates such a light, feminine fabric, Broderie Anglaise stitch is ideal for baby garments, soft cardigans, shawls, and delicate accessories. It also works beautifully as a decorative panel or border within a larger knitting project.
