Namaqua Blanket Kit contains yarn to make Hilda Steyn’s beautiful blanket.
“Thank you for buying this pattern and kit. Before you pick up your hook, I would like you to know what you have just been part of. Every cent you paid for this pattern has gone to Droogtehulp. Not a share of it. All of it. I designed this blanket and I receive nothing from it, and that was the whole point from the beginning.
Here is how that came about. The colours came first. Nine of them, pulled out of the Namaqualand flower fields. The colours that arrive after the rain and turn a dry country into something absolutely beautiful. I had planned to make the small size and give it to someone as a gift. That was the entire plan, and it was a perfectly good plan.
Then, on a quiet morning in August 2026, sitting outside our tent with my knitting, I understood very clearly that I was meant to make a big one instead, and that it was not meant to be mine. The pattern was to belong to Droogtehulp, published under their own name, so that every sale would go to them directly.
I am a designer trying to build a living from pattern sales. Giving one away is not a thing I would have thought of on my own. If you want the longer version of that morning, it is on my blog. And if it is not your sort of story, that is perfectly all right. Nothing about this blanket asks you to believe what I believe.
I phoned three people. Burre Burger at Droogtehulp said yes immediately. Dana at Colourspun said yes immediately and sponsored the yarn, and donates 25% of every kit sold. Pierre van Niekerk of Pierre Photography Passion said yes immediately and photographed the work. Nobody hesitated. That is not usually how things go.
Droogtehulp met Burre Burger NPC is a South African non-profit that supports farming families in drought-stricken areas. It began on 6 March 2017 with a single delivery to Calvinia. Since then, the work has grown to include food and essential supplies for farming communities, school fees so that farmers’ children can stay in school, medical assistance, and wheelchairs for older farmers. It is practical, unglamorous, and it reaches people who are quietly having a very hard time.
The farmers put food on our tables. This drought has been long. That is the whole argument, and you do not need any other one. This blanket helps this cause in three ways:
• The pattern. Published by Droogtehulp. Every cent of every sale goes to them.
• The yarn. Colourspun donates 25% of every Namaqua kit sold.
• The blanket. The original, the one photographed in these pages, will be raffled, with all proceeds going to Droogtehulp.
I spent days worrying about that last one. Why would anyone buy a ticket for a blanket crocheted by me? Then I understood I had the question backwards. Nobody will. They will buy a ticket because it helps a farmer. It was never about me.
What follows is an uncomplicated blanket. Take your time with it. Use the good yarn. And when it is finished and someone asks where it came from, you will have something worth telling them.”
