Bamboo Stitch – Knit

Although it looks complicated, the bamboo stitch is easy enough for beginners.

All it involves is passing a “yarn over” over 2 knit stitches and the result is a firm fabric with an interesting texture on both sides. It works well with all types of yarn and looks really good using multi-coloured yarn.

Starting a row with a yarn over can be tricky so this sample has a selvage stitch at the beginning and end of each row.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bamboo Stitch in knitting?
Bamboo Stitch is a knit stitch pattern that creates a firm, textured fabric with an interesting surface on both sides. Although it looks complicated, it is straightforward enough for confident beginners to tackle.

What stitches do I need to know to knit Bamboo Stitch?
You only need basic knit and purl stitches, plus a yarn over. Because the technique simply passes a yarn over across two knit stitches, it is easy to learn and quick to memorise.

What is the stitch multiple for Bamboo Stitch?
Cast on an even number of stitches. This pattern also uses a selvage stitch at the beginning and end of each row, since starting a row with a yarn over can otherwise be tricky.

What yarn works well for Bamboo Stitch?
Bamboo Stitch works well with all types of yarn. It looks particularly good in multi-coloured yarn, since the texture catches the colour changes beautifully. Pure Merino Aran was used for this sample.

Is Bamboo Stitch suitable for beginners?
Yes, although it looks impressive, Bamboo Stitch involves only a simple repeated action across four rows. Most beginners find it straightforward once the first repeat is understood.

What can I make with Bamboo Stitch?
Because it produces a firm, double sided fabric, Bamboo Stitch works well for scarves, throws, and cushion covers. It is also a good choice for any project where texture and visual interest matter on both sides.
