Tussah Silk Roving

Tussah Silk Roving is a luxury natural fibre prized for its textured, earthy appearance, beautiful matte sheen, and exceptional durability.

Uncultivated silkworms produce it, giving it a more organic character than cultivated Mulberry silk and it is also known as wild silk. The varied diet of the silkworms creates fibres that are shorter and thicker than Mulberry silk, with a distinct, slightly rustic and highly tactile feel, and a tougher, naturally hypoallergenic resilience.

Because of its fibre structure, tussah silk provides great loft, offering excellent breathability in warm weather and warmth in the cold. It is a favourite among fibre artists as a specialty spin-in or wet felted top, adding strength, texture, and a lustrous sheen to any project.

Our Tussah Silk Roving originates in Southern Africa and is hand dyed to order in our Heidelberg studio using earth friendly dyes with GOTS and Bluesign approval that conform to Oeko-Tex standards, in a process developed to use mainly solar energy and the minimum amount of water. Whether used alone or blended with other fibres, tussah silk adds beautiful sheen and drape to your work.

ColourSpun Colours

There are over 500 colours in our range,  see our inspiration here . Tussah Silk Roving is hand dyed in 250g batches , but we can dye larger batches on request.   We urge you to order enough fibre for your project, because, as with all dyed fibre, dye lots vary.

If you don’t find the colour you’re looking for, we will have a go at creating it for you.

Washing Instructions

Hand wash tussah silk in cool water and then dry flat for best results. See full washing instructions here: Washing Instructions

Delivery:

Please allow two weeks for production before shipping. We dye to order.

International orders may incur import duties and/or tax and clearing fees. The recipient of the shipment is liable for all such fees, which are payable to their government.
