Two Dreams, One Café: The Story of How Crochet & Craft Café Came to Be

Some stories begin with a grand plan. A business proposal. A five-year forecast. But Crochet & Craft Café in Fish Hoek began with scissors snipping, a chance conversation in a hair salon, and two women quietly carrying the same dream – years apart, miles apart, completely unaware of each other.

This is the story of how Crochet & Craft Café by ColourSpun came to be. And honestly? It was always meant to happen.

A Dream Mentioned Mid-Haircut

It was an ordinary Wednesday morning in a little salon in Kalk Bay. Lee was in the chair, chatting away, when she mentioned the dream she’d been carrying for years – a cosy crochet café where people could gather, create, and feel at home.

Ken paused mid-snip, smiled, and said: “You should talk to my mom.”

He mentioned it to his mom later, laughing at the funny coincidence.

And life carried on.

The Same Dream, Overheard Again

Months passed. Then, during a breathwork class in Fish Hoek, Jackie overheard Lee sharing that same dream. She stopped her, laughing in surprise.

“You should talk to my mom-in-law.”

When Lee realised that Ken and Jackie were talking about the same person – Dana, founder of ColourSpun – they both had a good giggle. Jackie handed over a phone number. She told Dana about the funny thing that had happened.

And life carried on.

December. Two Women. One Phone Call Each.

The year was winding down. Businesses were closing for the holidays. The world was exhaling.

And yet – two women, miles apart, found themselves thinking about the same conversations they’d each quietly brushed aside.

Lee thought about the crochet café she longed to build. Dana thought about the ColourSpun shop she’d dreamed of opening in Cape Town.

Both reached for their phones. Both called Jackie.

And suddenly, two dreams that had been patiently waiting found each other.

Something Beautiful Took Shape

From those first conversations – full of excitement, ideas, laughter, and an undeniable feeling of “this was meant to be” – something real began to grow.

Crochet & Craft Café by ColourSpun was born.

A place stitched together by serendipity. A place where creativity brews as warmly as the coffee. A place where yarn, colour, craft, and community meet – right in the heart of Fish Hoek.

A place built on the simple magic of people overhearing dreams and saying, “You should talk to my mom.”
